Labors of Love

From the time he was a young boy, John S. Mickman was enlisted by his family to help in the small businesses his entrepreneurial father operated—often by the seat of his pants. From dying lambs for Easter to corralling wild Mexican burros for rides at the fair to loading hundreds of wreaths for sale every Christmas season, there was never a dull moment, and John and his brothers learned the rewards of hard work and the thrills of adventure. In fact, where their father was concerned, the hard work often was a thrilling adventure!

Labors of Love: Tales of a Young Man’s Journeys and the Lessons Learned Along the Way are the stories of John’s early life, working alongside his family as a boy; venturing out after college to fish the waters of the North Pacific and Bering Sea; and returning home to grow a new family business as a husband and father, realizing the lessons he’d learned: the value of a strong work ethic, the importance of living a purposeful life, and the merit of taking calculated risks. Readers of all ages will be charmed and changed by the humor, heart, and soul found in these pages.

A Teacher's Review

“I have had the pleasure of reading Labors of Love.  Your stories are rich with the important qualities that anyone would want to pass on to the next generation – the value of a good work ethic, integrity, creativity and a stick with-it-attitude among many other excellent character traits and virtues that allow one to lead a successful life – not only in business and our careers, but also in our relationships with family and friends.

I am looking forward to sharing them with my students this year and in the coming school years.  I always look for short vignettes that can impress upon young minds the important and critical elements that lead to a rewarding and purpose driven life.  These are just such stories – so thank you – well done.”
